Nature Exploration - Eco-adventure

Nature exploration being a major priority area, NEC organises programmes to propagate the necessity of understanding the nature and enhance ecological awareness among adventurers and various sections of society. NEC has conducted a variety of adventure-related activities with Eco-understanding and Nature Exploration being the main focus of the programme. Adventure usually takes people closer to Nature and Wilderness and a correct understanding of the importance of these will not only give participants an opportunity to enjoy Nature better but also to ensure that their activities do not have any adverse effect on Nature. NEC has successfully organised two Ecological Mountaineering Expeditions to the Himalayas which included the documentation of the Ecological state of the areas visited, cleaning up the Mountains of the non-biodegradable garbage left behind by previous expeditions and working towards a more ethical Man-Mountain relationship

Community based Environmental Programmes

Rural people are one of the main target groups for our environmental programmes. NEC is proud to say that the response to these programmes has been overwhelmingly positive and the interaction and involvement of the local people during our out-of-city programmes has been very encouraging. NEC has a track record of having conducted environmental awareness and educational programmes in rural Karnataka on our own and in cooperation with organisations like the Karnataka Rajya Vignyana Parishad and Gethana. NEC also participated in the Stakeholder interaction discussions held under the "City Development Strategy Programme for Bangalore City", organised jointly by the BMDC and the World Bank.

As most of our activities have been outdoors, emphasis on greenery has always been stressed and most of the activities included tree planting/nature walks as a part of the programme. Conservation of 'endemic' species and the importance of biodiversity formed a very important part of the messages imparted during these activities. One of our most successful programmes in this field has been the greening of the catchment area of the Nelligudda reservoir through the planting of over ten thousand saplings in association with the Rotaract Club of Bangalore Cantonment South. Besides this, similar planting concepts and programmes have been carried out as part of the field activity of our outdoor/rural programmes on our own and also in association with the Bangalore University Environmental Science Department, Reserve Bank of India Adventure Club and the Karnataka Rajya Vignyana Parishad, to name a few.

Research and Information Dissemination

NEC has a pool of professionals who have been involved since 1987, with the study and conservation of wetlands. Surveys and studies related to wetlands and their avifaunas have been documented since then. This resulted in a report submitted to the Forest Department, Government of Karnataka in 1990, and a similar exercise in 1995 resulted in a another being submitted, in 1995, NEC has over the years, built regular monitoring data on the Lakes around Bangalore, which we feel is the most comprehensive data available on the subject today. NEC has also been co-ordinating the "Inland Wetlands of India - A conservation plan for protected areas", a Salim Ali Center for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore project, for Karnataka.

Besides collecting information on Wetlands, NEC has also been collecting and disseminating information on a variety of Conservation related subjects. Background work for the identification of Species and Areas for Bird Conservation activities in Karnataka was prepared by NEC in association with the Birdwatchers Field Club of Bangalore (BFCB) and Merlin Nature Club for the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and BIRDLIFE International - Important Bird Area Programme. NEC is also one of the constituents of BNHS, BIRDLIFE International and Royal Society for the Protection of Bird's NGO network in India. NEC organised a 'Symposium on Restoration of Lakes and Wetlands ' in November 2000 in association with the Center for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Karnataka Pollution Control Board, and the Karnataka Forest Department. NEC has also been awarded the "Leader Award", for the Status survey on the Broad-tailed Grassbird (Schoenicola platyura) in Karnataka, by the Oriental Bird Club, London. A proposal to bring out small booklets focusing on current environmental issues is also under consideration
